Chair of Education and Identity

The Theological University Utrecht develops projects and activities aimed at supporting the identity of Christian schools. The driving force behind these efforts is the Chair of Education and Identity, supported by a team of researchers. Professor Roel Kuiper holds this chair. Since 2021, these activities have been housed within the Centre of Expertise for Education and Identity.

Roel Kuiper: “Over the past few years, we have built up a great deal of knowledge and experience in shaping Christian identity in schools. We have now brought this together in this centre of expertise. This gives the work its own place and a stronger public profile. We are creating an accessible and recognisable platform for schools, school leaders, and researchers. In this way, we hope to support recognisably Christian education through knowledge and research.”

The Centre of Expertise focuses on the meaning of “identity” in Christian education. To this end, expertise is developed, researched, and shared in close collaboration with schools in our network. We believe that integrating theological and pedagogical perspectives can help in designing processes and strategies that support educational practice in its engagement with pupils. This converging approach therefore takes place across multiple disciplines and through an interplay between theoretical reflection and practical application.

The Centre of Expertise collaborates with other universities, universities of applied sciences, centres of expertise, and educational organisations such as VERUS. Research projects are established in collaboration with schools and knowledge partners. The regular network meetings, held under the title Identity as a Strong Brand, with teachers, school leaders, and administrators, are now organised by the Centre of Expertise.
