Organizational Science and Leadership (5 EC)

The module Organizational Science and Leadership (5 EC) gives students a better feel for the work context, culture, and leadership questions. In addition, it holds up a mirror for you to explore your own professionalism and talent and to explore what kind of work you might do. It becomes clear how theological competencies produce better organizations, and how organizational competencies produce better theologians. Moreover, starting from the broad Reformed tradition, a theological and philosophical interpretation of phenomena is sought. Also to trends in the field of organizational competence and leadership, which can become serviceable to a constructive Christian attitude.

Please note! This module is offered in guided self-study this year.

Three parts

The module Organizational Science and Leadership (5 EC) is structured using subject content lectures, methodological lectures, a dialogue afternoon, and a concluding assignment. Each subject matter lecture includes three parts:

  1. Perspective: A substantive narrative on an aspect of organizational science (e.g., “How do you develop a spiritual organizational culture?”, “Motivation in shapes and sizes/ work as a secular religion,” professional leadership, dynamics in an idealistic institution, dependent living as a self-employed person, find your vocation).
  2. Reflective: a theological reflection on the topic of the lecture by one of the students after consultation with a theologian.
  3. Active: an activating processing for the coming week.

Crashcourse

In addition, the module includes a crash course in methodology. In it, students are introduced to and practice the qualitative methods they need for their assignment. They are also introduced to anthropological sensitivity as a core skill. These course elements add a special emphasis on ethnography and the skill of listening to the skills of public presentation, writing, and debate. The lectures culminate in an afternoon of dialogue in which a theologian from within TU reflects on approaches to organizational science and an organizational expert reflects on theology, in both cases with active participation by the students. During the college weeks, students maintain a reading report.

During the study weeks of period D, a practical interaction takes place. This preferably involves walking with someone who was trained as a theologian but is now working in a different professional context. Students thereby experience the work context of a professional. In addition, they use the methodological tools provided to give meaning to that experience. Thus, they practice sensitivity.
