Newest edition: Christ in the Old Testament

‘Like a button in a buttonhole, this is how the New fits the Old Testament.’ This statement typifies Henk de Jong (1932-2023), honorary doctor of Theological University Utrecht. Many Bible readers connect the coming of Christ mainly with well-known prophecies and psalms read around Christmas and Easter. But how do all these stories about Israel and other, sometimes unruly, texts from the Old Testament connect with Christian faith? Henk de Jong has made it his life’s work to show that all of the Old Testament moves toward Christ. He creatively elaborated his vision and in doing so has inspired many.

This commemorative volume is dedicated to Henk de Jong’s biblical-theological legacy. Five scholars of the Old Testament weigh the value of his work and compare his biblical interpretation with other views of Christ in the Old Testament and with Jewish interpretations. This volume also includes a number of texts by De Jong himself, some of which have not been published before. All in all, a fine palette of contributions to reflect on the significance of his work or to become more closely acquainted with it.
