Have you studied theology in the past? And would you like to learn to preach as well? In many churches, preaching authority is granted not only to pastors, but also to others who have received gifts from the Lord for this purpose. But how can you develop this gift and form yourself into a preacher of the gospel?

Take the Preaching Course and get your certificate in preaching competence!

At TU Utrecht it is possible to get this certificate in a two-year course. For this purpose, a package of 30 credits has been put together, consisting of homiletics lectures, practical exercises and supporting modules Biblical and systematic theology. Meanwhile, a course of personal counseling is also underway. You will be taught by qualified lecturers from TU. Your certificate will allow you to demonstrate your competence with your denomination.

A successful pilot has been run for this course. From September 2020 it will be offered, for the time being first as a two-year variant. Those who are not members of the Dutch Reformed Churches can also take this course.

We find it essential that the preacher of the gospel is truly at home in the Bible, possesses good self-reflection, is adequately schooled in Reformed theology and has a thoughtful vision for preaching, congregation and culture. In addition, we seek the integration of a lived faith, a spiritual and craft sermon preparation process, and an engaging presentation technique.

Note! If you preside at a church service more or less frequently, this training will lay a valuable foundation for your preaching. But this course is NOT training to become a church pastor! In some churches, national preaching authority is tied to the office of pastor. If you want preaching authority, discuss in your own denomination what scope and conditions are available for this.

Time investment

It is a solid program: on Thursdays you follow lectures at the Theological University Utrecht, and in between you are busy with preparation assignments and practical exercises. It will take an average of 10 hours per week. You will walk as much as possible with the students of the church route and of the preaching master’s program. It will sometimes happen that we cannot organize the lectures in one day.

Entry requirements

• A graduate in HBO theology, a bachelor’s degee in WO theology or demonstrable knowledge and experience at that level
• An internship (church community with a pastor-mentor from your own church)

Costs

The annual rate is half of the part-time rate, for the academic year 2024-2025 it is €1012.50, personal contribution €85.00 and collection costs are €26.00

• When registering, we need the following documents from you:
• A motivation letter of approximately 1 A4
• A recent CV with completed studies, work and internship experiences
• Copies of relevant diplomas and transcripts
• Copy of identity card
• Official passport photo
