At the tenth Herman Bavinck Lecture, dr. Henk van den Belt will give a lecture with the following theme:
Providence and the Problem of War
The lecture will take place on the 4th of June at 7:30 pm at the Theologische Universiteit Utrecht.
Lecturer
Dr. Henk van den Belt is Professor of Systematic Theology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Theological University of Apeldoorn. He is Director of the Herman Bavinck Center for Reformed and Evangelical Theology. He received his PhD in Theology from Leiden University in 2006 and subsequently served as Associate Professor of Reformed Theology at Utrecht University (2008–2012) and as Professor of the History of Reformed Theology at the University of Groningen (2012–2018).
His current research focuses on the development of the doctrine of divine providence in Reformed theology. He is the author of The Authority of Scripture in Reformed Theology: Truth and Trust (Brill, 2008) and of numerous articles on Reformed Orthodoxy and neo-Calvinism. He also edited Restoration through Redemption: John Calvin Revisited (Brill, 2013) and the second volume of the Synopsis of Purer Theology (Brill, 2016).
Most recently, he published a Dutch monograph on the work of the Holy Spirit in relation to Scripture, entitled Geestspraak (2024). Prior to his academic career, he served as a pastor in the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. He currently serves as a member of its synod.
Herman Bavinck Lecture Series
In the Herman Bavinck Lecture series scholars are invited who share Bavinck’s love for the Reformed tradition, are aware of the appeal of his vision of grace as a transforming force in both personal life and in society and culture, and in their scholarly endeavour reflect his deep and Catholic vision of the Christian faith. They are asked to address in their lecture key questions regarding the contribution which Reformed theology can make to church and society in a postmodern world.
